"St. Gertrude"

This was the most difficult of the tunes I recorded for this project, which is why I skipt over it initially.  The tune is in Eb major in The Lutheran Service Book (#662) and in Lutheran Worship (#518) but in E major in The Lutheran Hymnal (#658), so I had to transpose it so that all three would match.  At first, I was going to try F major, but this was too high, and either of the original two keys would have been too difficult for me.  Eventually, I decided on transposing it down to D major, although this was too low and some parts fell beneath the instruments' ranges.  To work around this, I played the first phrase of the refrain on alto recorder, and I had to tune down the lowest string on my bass to get the one low D note in the refrain in the TLH arrangement.

In order, the arrangements are LSB, LW, and TLH.  Except for the refrain, the LSB and TLH arrangements are the same.  At the beginning of the tenor part in the LW arrangement, there's the same arpeggiation that appears in the soprano part later.

"St. Thomas"

The arrangements in The Lutheran Hymnal and The Lutheran Service Book are the same, so I didn't do both.  I did the arrangements from Lutheran Worship (#12) and The Lutheran Hymnal (#68).  The last phrase of the tenor part is a bit high, and I cheated a bit and did just that phrase with alto recorder.

"St. Savior"

As with the last tune I did for this project, this appears in only one of the three hymnals I've been using (The Lutheran Hymnal #434).  I transposed it from Bb major to C major and went through the arrangement twice.

"St. Petersburg"

Of the three hymnals I've been using for this project, this tune is in only The Lutheran Hymnal (#493).  My recording is twice through that arrangement.

I'm not sure this actually fits the conceit of this project (which is to record the tunes named after saints), but it was only after I'd recorded the tune that I started thinking about that.

"St. Peter"

There are two different arrangements of this tune in Lutheran Worship.

The Lutheran Service Book #524, Lutheran Worship #279, Lutheran Worship #474, The Lutheran Hymnal #364

"St. Michael"

The arrangements in The Lutheran Hymnal and The Lutheran Service Book are the same except for a couple notes in the bass part that are in different octaves, and there are two different arrangements in Lutheran Worship.

"St. Mary Magdalene"

"St. Louis"

This tune is #361 in The Lutheran Service Book, #60 in Lutheran Worship, and #647 in The Lutheran Hymnal.  (That's the order of the arrangements in my recording.)  I had to transpose the TLH version from G major to F major to match the LSB and LW versions.

"St. John"

This tune is in The Lutheran Hymnal (#380) and in The Lutheran Service Book (#565).  The keys are different, but the arrangement is the same.  I used the TLH version (so I could include the Amen cadence), but I transposed it from D major to C major.

"St. Hilary"

Lately, I haven't been doing much work on my project of recording the hymn tunes named after saints, partially because the prospect of recording "St. Gertrude" is a bit intimidating.  For now, to get things going again, I'm temporarily skipping it.

Of my three main hymnals, "St. Hilary" is in only one; it's #640 in The Lutheran Hymnal.  I transposed it from D major to C major.

"St. George's, Windsor"

In both The Lutheran Hymnal and The Lutheran Service Book, every instance of this tune has the same arrangement (the two hymnals have different arrangements, though), but there are two different arrangements in Lutheran Worship (#88 and #495).  Also, it occurred to me that I should record the arrangements in reverse chronological order so that the arrangement from TLH comes last and I can go straight from that into the accompanying Amen cadence.

This is LSB #394, LW #88, LW #495, TLH #134.  I should note that in TLH, the tune is called just "St. George," not "St. George's, Windsor."

"St. Fulbert"

Of the three main hymnals I have, this tune appears in only The Lutheran Service Book (#757).  I went through it twice.

"St. Flavian"

Sorting through the various arrangements of this tune took some time.  All of its appearances in The Lutheran Hymnal are the same (I used #22).  Only one note differs between the two appearances in Lutheran Worship (what's an E in the alto part in #342 is a D in #502), but I suspect this difference is an error, and/so I didn't play through both.  There are two different arrangements of the tune in The Lutheran Service Book.  The arrangement that's #577 and #857 also appears as #885 in Hymnal Supplement 98, and I played from that notation while I had my copy of LSB open to the other arrangement (#787).  (Confusingly, while LSB 787 and HS98 885 are different arrangements, the texts are the same:  "The Temple Rang with Golden Coins").

Altogether then, my recording is one verse each from TLH 22, LW 502, LSB 787, HS98 885, and then the Amen cadence from TLH.

"St. Dunstan's"

This is twice through the arrangement from Lutheran Worship (#384), but I transposed it from G major to F major to make the alto part easier to play.  This is in 6/4, but there's an extra beat in the last measure.

"St. Denio"

I combined arrangements from Lutheran Worship (#451) and The Lutheran Service Book (#802).

"St. Crispin"

The arrangements in Lutheran Worship and The Lutheran Service Book are the same.  I went through one verse of that arrangement (LW #362) and one verse of the arrangement from The Lutheran Hymnal (#245), which I had to transpose from Eb major to D major to match the key of the LW arrangement.

"St. Columba"

This tune is in both Lutheran Worship (#412) and The Lutheran Service Book (#709), but the arrangement is the same.  I transposed it from Eb major to D major.

"St. Clement"

"O Light Whose Splendor" (LSB #891) is probably the more familiar text sung to this tune, but I used LSB #886 ("The Day Thou Gavest") because I liked the key better.  The arrangement is the same, but 891 is in F major, and 886 is in G major.  This tune isn't in The Lutheran Hymnal or Lutheran Worship.
